Just worked this out myself having acquired a Carneddau pony just before Christmas! When you buy or aquire a Carneddau pony from a farmer, he will have ensured that it has been microchipped and will probably ask you to pay for this (about £15). This is essential before the pony can legally be moved from the derogation area (area exempt from DEFRA passporting). The farmer should process the paperwork which will ensure that a passport listing the microchip number and a minimum by way of description of the pony (sex, approx age, colour) is sent to you as the new owner. In my case, I have just received the passport from PetID. Its then up to you to register a name for the pony (mine is currently officially known as Lot 32!) and make any other changes necessary to the passport. But not bad for a total of £15!
